Earthing: Reconnecting the Human body to the Earth’s Surface

During recent decades, chronic illness, immune disorders and inflammatory diseases have been on the rise. Researchers repeatedly aim their focus on environmental factors. However, the possibility of modern disconnection with the Earth’s surface has been recently on the rise as one of the most important discoveries of our time. It’s difficult not to wonder, what’s all the new hype about?

Earthing, also known as grounding, is demonstrating increased physical well-being through connecting to Earth’s electrical energy.

Although Earthing is becoming a rapidly growing movement; however, in 1990, when a retired cable TV executive first introduced the idea, he was first met with skepticism. Then, in 2004, ‘The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine’ published the post study results: ‘Earthing is recognized in re-synchronizing cortisol secretion’!

Today, there are twenty-one peer-reviewed, and published studies examining the health benefits of earthing. Emerging scientific research has finally revealed the positive, and often overlooked, environmental factor affecting human health: the derivative of direct physical contact with the extensive supply of electrons derived from the Earth’s surface. Sadly, our modern lifestyle separated us from this essential contact. New research is suggesting that this disconnect may be one of the contributing causes to the modern physiological debilitation and negative ailments.

Studies focusing on the interaction between the environment and the human health (involving the increasingly toxic air, water and chemicals) are continuous. It is an all-pervasive fact that the environment is also notably beneficial. Yet, it is somehow surprising that Earthing is often overlooked as equally being key for health maintenance and disease prevention. In the late 19th century, a back-to-nature movement in Germany was formed, claiming back the health benefits of going barefoot – even in cold weather. In the 20’s, Dr. White investigated the practice of sleeping grounded, with its proven results in improved sleep. The practice involved sleeping grounded after being connected to the ground in some way, such as copper wires attached to the water, gas, or radiator pipes. However, these ideas didn’t catch up in mainstream society.

Our connection to nature, the planet and the universe is vital. Our modern lifestyle has progressively separated human beings from the primordial flow of Earth’s electrons. Since the 1960’s, we have traded our traditional conducive leather-soled shoes for the insulated rubber and plastics. Obviously, we no longer sleep on the floor…

What is the intuitive assumption of earthing?

We all know the numerous benefits of the sun and the earth, however not many are aware of vitamin G which is provided to us from the earth’s surface – G for ground. This could be the difference between feeling good and not so good.

From a scientific perspective, Earth is said to have a negative charge. Overtime, especially with our modern lifestyle, our bodies build up a positive charge (among other reasons, due to free radicals floating in our bodies). Direct contact with Earth can balance out the charges and return the body to its natural state.

To put it briefly, when your bare feet or skin comes in contact with Earth, free electrons (nature’s biggest antioxidant) are taken up by the body to neutralize damaging excess free radicals (excess of them normally lead to inflammation and pains) which is part of the healing process. Free radicals lack electrons, these electrons are normally supplied through vitamins and polyphenols.

The Earth’s surface possesses an infinite and continuous renewable supply of free electrons. It is electrically conductive, and the electron supply is always replenished through an atmospheric electrical circuit. The body is composed of water and minerals, which are conductors of electrons. Connection with Earth’s electrons upgrades one’s physiology by allowing the body to self- repair thereby promoting well-being and better sleep. It also stabilizes our biological rhythms making it the most natural anti-inflammatory and anti-aging remedy around!

Thus, when a person is grounded, those electrons naturally flow between the Earth and the body, reducing free radicals and eliminating any static electrical charges. The theory relies on the presumption that connecting to the energy of the planet is healthy for our souls and bodies. From a definite perspective, New-Age Western practices have claimed that there are numerous benefits to connecting energetically to Mother Earth, and consequently, from a scientific perspective, it has also been set forth that having access to abundant supply of free electrons in the, somehow negatively charged ground, can help in neutralizing free radicals – which are involved in the body’s immune and inflammatory responses. Therefore, it’s intuitive that – like a cable system – the act of grounding neutralizes any charge in the body.

How?

It was discovered that there is a similarity between the human body (a signal-transmitting organism), and an electrical cable (used to transmit signals). A well-grounded TV cable installation prevents disturbances and preserves a high-quality image. We eliminate interference to our cable by having it grounded to Earth, influencing our bio-electrical, bio-energetic and biochemical processes which have direct effect on chronic illnesses.

Many people, including GP’s, advocate for Earthing, as a result of the mounting evidence suggesting that the Earth’s negative potential can create a stable internal functioning for our internal body systems. Additionally, the Earth’s oscillations are also a key factor in setting our biological clocks and regulating certain body rhythms, such as secretions of cortisol (our stress hormones).

How can we access these results?

Through the simple method of taking off our shoes and the basic act of going outdoors, placing our bare hands and feet on Earth (beach, parks) for at least thirty minutes daily can give astounding health benefits. Note that going barefoot at home is not as effective. Simply, our shoes or even our minimal contact to materials like hardwood, can insulate us from the Earth’s electric potential. You can also sit or walk on grass, sand, or plain concrete. These are all conductive surfaces from which you can get the Earth’s energy.

How did we become distanced from Mother Earth throughout these years?

Throughout history, humans walked mostly barefoot, or with shoes made of animal skin. Our modern shoes, which tend to have non-conductive soles, are insulators of energy. In ancient times people also slept on the ground. Therefore, in case of the direct contact with the ground with our feet, or through the perspiration that happened in the animal skins used as footwear, the ground’s abundant free electrons can enter the body. Through both mechanisms, the body is able to balance the electrical potential of the Earth, thereby stabilizing the inner electrical environment of the body’s organs.

The fist added benefit you will feel post grounding is better quality sleep. That is due to the feelings of discharge which aids in easier breathing. Over time, you will begin to feel more calmness and increased blood flow in the body and even in the face – turning the face pink!

Grounding impacts inflammation in the body, through its impact on mood, reducing stress and its calming effect which eventually will positively impact one’s emotional health.

Earthing is believed to help with problems like:

  • Inflammation and chronic pain.

  • Energy and vitality deficiency.

  • Arthritis.

  • Insomnia.

  • Depression.

  • Shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic tone.

  • Blood thinning effect, and blood pressure and flow.

  • Muscle tension and headaches.

  • Hormonal and menstrual symptoms

  • Jet lag.

  • Athletic activity.

Some tests that were conducted proved that results go even beyond reduction of pain to bringing relief from asthmatic conditions, respiratory conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, PMS, sleep apnea and hypertension.

Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman’s study confirmed the “umbrella” effect of earthing on the body. He said that ‘when the body’s potential is the same as the Earth’s electrical potential, it becomes an extension of the Earth’s gigantic electric system.’

Considerable data is also showing that electromagnetic fields in our environment cause a risk to health, and there is no question that our body reacts to the presence of these fields.

Although science is always trying to catch up with nature… Could such a hidden resource be located under our feet? All the research is pointing towards the Earth’s electrons being dismissed as an untapped health asset. It is also supported that grounding or earthing may be essential along with the additional natural resources: sun, clean air and water, nutritious food and physical activity.
